This is a great new Polo scent that retains the vibe of the traditional Polo from the 80's but makes it a little easier to wear. Modern Reserve was created by the same perfumer who was the nose behind the old one, Carlos Benaim. The old one, considered by many to be a classic, is very powerful and can be difficult to wear. This tones it down a bit, takes out the tobacco, but retains the fresh green/pine vibe from the old. Dries down to a lovely, sweet pine and suede smell that lasts for hours. This is a terrific update and scent in its own right that is also quite different, in a good way, from most of what is being put out there right now. Kudos to Ralph Lauren.

I bought this based on a fragrance strip I smelled in a magazine. I thought it had a nice masculine scent with an ode to the original. I smelled it again at Sephora, but it was about $25 more expensive than I wanted to pay. I searched at Amazon and found it more reasonably priced.
As a daily cologne it is great. It lasts all day and tends to change (mellow) as it wears. It is a masculine cologne with no hints of sweetness. That said it is less intense than regular Polo, which borders on an industrial, sometimes toxic smell if used in the wrong quantities. This one can be worn to business meetings, dinner, or daily without overpowering others in the process.
As with most colognes, it helps to have light hand on the spritzer and don't use too much. A little goes a long way with Polo Modern Reserve.

This Christmas, I was happy to receive a bottle of what appeared to be one of my favorite colognes, Polo. As I wore it, I noticed that it smelled slightly different. After doing a bit of research, I found that Modern Reserve was introduced in 2008 as a 30th Anniversary "Modern" update to the classic Polo fragrance.
My only criticism is that Ralph Lauren could do better to advertize that this is a different scent from the original. I don't remember seeing any ads. The bottle and packaging are almost identical and stores place Modern Reserve right next to the classic Polo. It looked to me like the fancier box was to commemorate Polo's 30th anniversary. If I had've known, I would have most likely stuck with the original. I like classics, which is why I still wear Polo after all these years.
If you like classic Polo, you'll like, Modern Reserve. I don't know yet if I like it better than the original, but at this point; I like it just as much. As I said, the difference to me is slight. Try it for yourself and see. Just take notice of which bottle you pick from the shelf.
